Stripy Duck Cafe & Bookshop is a cozy spot that blends the quiet charm of a local café with the inviting presence of a small bookshop, tucked right on High Street in Bruton. This is the kind of place that attracts people looking for a relaxed morning or afternoon escape—whether that’s a peaceful coffee break with a good read or a casual lunch that feels a little more thoughtful than your average café stop.

The café side centers strongly around quality coffee and baked goods, with particular praise from locals for the pecan and raspberry brownies and Bakewell tarts that seem to stand out for their freshness and flavor. For those who prefer something a little more savory, the mushroom and cheese tarts come recommended, making it easy to linger through lunchtime without feeling like you’re just grabbing a snack. Drinks options stretch beyond the usual, with turmeric chai and almond cappuccinos providing a bit of a twist for regulars who come for more than the basics. Non-coffee drinkers can also find comfort in a well-crafted hot chocolate, which fits perfectly with the calm vibe.

Inside, the atmosphere is quietly welcoming—bookshelves line the walls, creating a backdrop that naturally encourages slower moments and easy conversation. The music is played at a level that feels intentional: just loud enough to fill the space without interrupting chats or making it hard to concentrate on a book. Staff are approachable, adding to the unhurried comfort that locals seem to appreciate.

People who enjoy pairing their reading with a good cup of coffee will find this particularly agreeable, as well as anyone looking for a clean, well-kept environment that balances activity with relaxation. Visitors often pop in for morning coffee and cake, then return around lunchtime for something more substantial or to shop for an interesting book before heading out. Given the quiet scene and gentle buzz, mid-mornings or early afternoons are likely the most inviting times to drop by.

  • Best for coffee lovers who enjoy browsing books and casual bites
  • Especially appealing to those valuing a calm, bookish atmosphere
  • Friendly to people who might want to spend time alone or in small groups
  • Clean and thoughtfully curated space that encourages lingering

Overall, Stripy Duck functions as a subtle local hub for thoughtful downtime, where the combination of carefully prepared drinks, standout cakes, and an intriguing book selection draws a steady but unhurried crowd. It’s a place to revisit, whether for a quiet morning retreat or a relaxed afternoon break on Bruton’s High Street.

Popped in this morning and had a great pecan and raspberry browny. Spied, they had interesting mushroom and cheese tarts, so I came back at lunch for one of those and a repeat of a great de-caf almond cappuccino! Oh, and they had an interesting range of books!

Lovely location and ambience inside the bookshop. Friendly staff, amazing drinks, especially the turmeric chai latte with oat milk. Cakes looked awesome, unfortunately the only vegan ones were bars in wrapping that didn’t look so good as the non-vegan ones.

Cakes were extramly good. I am quite critical in general but this was one of the best brownies i've ever had. Bakewell also amazing. Salad was less exciting but still nice. Has to be 5 stars for cakes that good.

Lovely wee café with excellent coffee and so clean! A very pleasant atmosphere with all the books and the music was just the right level - loud enough to be relaxing but not so loud that you can't have a conversation.

Pretty little cafe. Very friendly staff, tasty little lunches and gluten free cakes. Good tea and coffee beautifully presented, and surrounded by a fine selection of books. What could be better

Lovely little cafe/bookshop. A great selection of books, well laid out. The cakes are amazing. Great value for money compared to other local establishments.
